Currents of Belonging - A guide for planning inclusively in Secondary Schools
The Currents of Belonging is a practical guide for subject leaders, curriculum teams and school leaders who want to move beyond isolated inclusion initiatives and create meaningful belonging through the curriculum.
Building on the ideas explored in It's More Than Flags and Rainbows, this resource introduces four Currents of Belonging that help educators examine how representation, role models, curriculum design and classroom culture influence pupils' experiences of a subject.
Rather than offering generic checklists, the guide helps schools ask better questions. Through subject-specific examples, reflection tools, planning frameworks and AI-supported review prompts, it supports departments to identify where belonging is strengthened, where it may be unintentionally weakened, and how curriculum decisions shape engagement, participation and achievement.
Designed for use in curriculum reviews, departmental meetings, professional development and whole-school improvement work, this resource helps schools create learning environments where more pupils can see themselves, their futures and their potential reflected in the subjects they study.
Because belonging is not an add-on. It is a foundation for engagement, achievement and success.
