Skin of the Sea

The story is about Simi, one of the Mami Wata, mermaid-like creatures created by the orisa Yemoja, a type of goddess in West African mythology. The work of the Mami Wata is to collect the souls of deceased enslaved people who are thrown overboard from slavers’ ships, before blessing their journey to the next world, as they cannot be given a proper burial. The story is set in the mid-fifteenth century, when Portugal began to capture and buy Black people from Africa and take them to Europe as enslaved people.
