Boys Don't Cry

Dante has just finished his A level exams, and has big dreams of going to university and becoming a journalist. In the opening chapter of the novel, he is eagerly waiting for the postman to deliver his A-level results. But when the front doorbell rings, it’s not the postman at the door but Melanie, Dante’s ex-girlfriend. Melanie has a baby – a ten-month-old baby girl named Emma. Dante learns that he is Emma’s father, even though he had no idea of her existence. Melanie leaves Emma with him then disappears, leaving Dante to look after Emma with the help of his father and brother.

We follow Dante’s journey as he gives up his dreams and accepts his responsibilities as a young single father. The backdrop to the story is Dante’s relationship with his father and brother, the brothers’ grief for their mother, Dante and his father’s journey to accepting that Adam is gay, and the daily prejudice Adam faces because of his sexuality.
