This project has been developed by More Than Flags and Rainbows CIC in partnership with Merthyr Tydfil County Council to support teachers to plan learning that is relevant, engaging and rooted in the local community. It brings together people, places and events from the area to help create curriculum experiences that feel meaningful and connected to pupils’ lives.
The approach is based on a simple principle. Teaching should be with diversity, not only about diversity. Rather than treating diversity as something separate or occasional, this project supports teachers to embed it across everyday learning, so that pupils encounter a wide range of people and perspectives as a natural part of the curriculum.
The project was shaped through collaboration with teachers, libraries, charities and community organisations. These discussions highlighted the need for practical support, local examples and approaches that build confidence without adding unnecessary workload.
The website and teacher pack work together to support this. The map provides starting points through local stories, while the pack offers guidance, planning tools and example curriculum journeys to help bring these into the classroom.
This is a growing resource. New content will continue to be added over time, helping to reflect the full breadth of Merthyr’s history, community and identity.
