Colours of Home
Miriam Latimer

The story is told from the perspective of Olive, a young girl who is hosting Ana, a refugee from a war-torn country. Ana arrives with little more than a small rucksack and a deep sadness, depicted through her colourless illustrations. As Olive and Ana begin to communicate through drawings, Olive learns about Ana’s past and the hardships she has faced. As Ana works through her sadness and makes new connections, colour begins to come back into her world. Olive shows increasing kindness and more understanding as the story progresses and her acts of kindness evolve and show more empathy and compassion. The narrative emphasises the importance of empathy and the impact of welcoming others into our lives.
